The trail, the route and tips for Almaty's favourite plateau.
In short. Kok-Zhailyau is a mountain plateau (about 2200 m) in Ile-Alatau National Park near Almaty. A direct, well-trodden trail to the plateau starts right at Country House — about 6 km, roughly 1 hour 10 minutes on foot. There are city-side trailheads too, but they are farther. The trail is open year-round.
Kok-Zhailyau is a scenic mountain plateau at about 2200 metres in Ile-Alatau National Park, one of the most popular day-hike spots for Almaty residents. In summer — green meadows and apple orchards; in winter — snow and sledding.
The big advantage of Country House is that a direct, well-trodden trail to Kok-Zhailyau starts right at the cabin:
From the cabin the climb takes about 1 hour 10 minutes at an easy pace (around 6 km). Along the way you can detour to the small Batareika waterfall.
Kok-Zhailyau doesn't have to be the finish. For a full day in the mountains the trail continues along the Zailiysky Alatau ridge: Kamenskoye Plateau → Kok-Zhailyau → the "Tri Brata" (Three Brothers) rock → Kumbel Peak. This is a route for the well-prepared — the elevation gain is serious and the weather on the ridge changes quickly. The trailhead is just a few minutes' walk from Country House, so you can set off early and take your time.
To set off early, it's handy to spend the night right at the trailhead. Country House sits in the Medeu district at 1500 m — the Kok-Zhailyau trail starts essentially at the cabin, and a sauna awaits after the hike.
